May 31st - June 1st

Saturday May 31st

So even though I woke up about 3 times during the night because of the jetlag, my night of sleep was quite good.
Christchurch is known as the "Garden City". In fact, there are many gardens, parks, and natural reserves all around and within the city, which is kinda cool. For that reason, today we decided to go to the WillowBank Natural Reserve, which was about a 10-15 minute drive. The reserve was pretty interesting with a lot of different animals. One of the cool things we did was to feed eels. These things were nasty and big and.....well you get the idea. They were all sticking their heads out, one of top of the other to try to get the food. eww

Throughout the reserve, we saw a lot of colorfuls birds, ducks, capuchin monkeys, sheeps, really strange pigs, chimpanzees, wallabies (they look like little kangaroos), and last but not least, KIWIS!! I wish I could post a picture of the kiwis that we saw...but the only problem is: they live in the dark and taking pictures was prohibited.

The kiwi is the official bird of New Zealand. It cannot fly. It is the symbol of many different stores and brands here in New Zealand. New Zealanders are also referred to as "Kiwis". For example, it is common to hear such things as: "This girl got married to a kiwi, so she moved to New Zealand with him", or...."a typical kiwi dish is fish & chips".

Later that night, we decided to go to a sports pub because the local rugby team (the Cruzaders) was playing. If you did not know, rugby in New Zealand is HUGE!!! but i mean, HUGE! Therefore, we could not afford to miss a game...especially because it was the final of the Super 14 Cup. I had never watched a game before, so it was quite fun to learn about it. Fortunately, the local team won! Yay!
Sunday June 1st
Today, we had no plans. We each stayed with our families and did our own thing. John and Jennifer, my temporary host "parents" for the weekend, ended up taking me to two different places during the afternoon. First, we went to the beach to check out the "Cave Rock". As the name says, it basically consists of a huge rock in which a cave has formed and on top of which people can climb. It was pretty cool.

The second place where they brought me is called "Taylor's Mistake". It basically is a walk in the mountains along the coast. The scenery was impressive. We walked for about 2 hours. I really enjoyed it a lot. Here are some pictures of Taylor's Mistake:

Once we got back from Taylor's Mistake, they made me watch a movie called "Black Sheep". They really insisted to watch it because it supposedly is a New Zealand "classic" and it would change for ever my perception of sheeps. To make it short, the movie is a funny horror movie about sheeps that have been genetically modified and that attack humans and eat them. Also, if you are bitten by one, you slowly transform into a sheep yourself. hehe Needless to say that it was quite a strange movie......gross and funny at the same time. Now I will think twice before petting the next sheep I see. hahhah
